Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5–6

Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” It doesn’t ask us to stop thinking. It asks us to hold our own judgment humbly, bring every part of life to God, and trust him to guide us.

What it means

  • With all your heart. In the Bible the heart is the centre of thought and choice, not just feeling. Trust God with your decisions, not only your emotions.
  • Lean not on your own understanding. Our understanding is good but limited. Don’t put your whole weight on it.
  • In all your ways acknowledge Him. Every area: work, money, family, plans. Bring them all to God.
  • He will make your paths straight. Not always easy or short, but right, and leading somewhere good.

Pray it

Lord, I trust you with all my heart. I don’t understand everything about [this decision]. I bring it to you. Make my path straight, and give me courage to follow it. Amen.

Read alongside

My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for they will add length to your days, years and peace to your life. Never let loving devotion or faithfulness leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will find favor and high regard in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil. This will bring healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.

It means not putting your full weight on your own judgment. Think carefully, seek wise counsel, but trust God more than your own ability to see every outcome.
