Bible verse
Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd
The best-loved psalm, read at bedsides and funerals and on ordinary mornings for three thousand years.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Psalm 23:1–6
Psalm 23 is a song of trust by David. It pictures God as a shepherd who provides, leads, restores and protects, and who stays with us even “through the valley of the shadow of death.” It ends with God as a generous host, and the confidence that “goodness and mercy” will follow us all our days.
What it means
- The LORD is my shepherd (v. 1). David had been a shepherd. He knew sheep don’t survive alone. To call God “my shepherd” is to say: I am cared for, and I am not in charge of everything.
- Green pastures, quiet waters (vv. 2–3). God leads us to rest and restores us, not only to work. And he leads in “paths of righteousness for the sake of His name”: the right way, not just the easy one.
- The valley (v. 4). The psalm doesn’t promise there will be no dark valley. It promises company in it: “for You are with me.” Notice David stops talking about God and starts talking to him.
- The table (v. 5). The picture changes from shepherd to host. In the presence of enemies, God honours his guest, anoints his head and fills his cup to overflowing.
- All my days (v. 6). Goodness and mercy don’t just wait for us; they “follow” us, the Hebrew word means pursue.
Jesus and the shepherd
Jesus took up this picture: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep” (John 10:11). So Christians recognise Jesus’ care in the shepherd of Psalm 23: a shepherd who goes all the way into the valley for us.
Pray it
Lord, you are my shepherd; I have what I need. Lead me to rest today, and restore my soul. In every dark valley, be with me. Let your goodness and mercy follow me all my days. Amen.
