A prayer for peace

A prayer for the peace Jesus promised, the kind the world can’t give.

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

John 14:27

Jesus promised his followers a peace unlike the world’s: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you… Do not let your hearts be troubled” (John 14:27). A prayer for peace asks God to quiet a troubled heart, to stay with us in what is unresolved, and to make us people of peace with others.

Pray

Lord Jesus, you said, “My peace I give to you.” I need it today.

Quiet my racing thoughts. Settle the fear underneath them. I don’t ask that everything be fixed first; I ask that you be with me in the middle of it.

And make me a person of peace: slow to anger, quick to forgive, gentle with the people around me. Amen.

Peace in the Bible

The Hebrew word shalom means more than calm. It means wholeness: things as God made them to be, between us and God, inside us, and between people. That is why the Bible links peace with trust (“You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You,” Isaiah 26:3) and with how we treat each other.

Scripture behind this prayer

You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.

Isaiah 26:3

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:7
