Prayer
A prayer of thanksgiving
A prayer of thanks for ordinary days, and a short grace for the Thanksgiving table.

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth. Serve the LORD with gladness; come into His presence with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and bless His name. For the LORD is good, and His loving devotion endures forever; His faithfulness continues to all generations.
Psalm 100:1–5
The Bible calls us to “give thanks in every circumstance” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and to “enter His gates with thanksgiving” (Psalm 100:4). A prayer of thanksgiving names specific gifts, big and small, thanks God for who he is, and remembers those who have less.
Pray
Generous God, thank you. For this day, for food on the table and a roof overhead, for the people who love me and the ones I get to love.
Thank you for the small things I usually miss: [name three].
Most of all, thank you for Jesus, and for your love that endures forever. Make me generous with what you have given me, and remember those who have little tonight. Amen.
A short grace for the Thanksgiving table
Lord, thank you for this food, for the hands that made it, and for the people around this table. Bless those who are missing from it, and those who have no table tonight. Make us thankful, and make us generous. Amen.
A simple practice
Each night this week, name three things you are thankful for that you didn’t notice in the morning. Gratitude grows when it is specific.
Scripture behind this prayer
Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
