Bible verses about healing

Verses to pray in sickness and recovery, honest about both hope and waiting.

The Bible shows a God who heals: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3), and it tells the sick to ask others to pray (James 5:14–15). It is also honest that healing doesn’t always come as we ask, and promises God’s strength in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

The verses

  1. Psalm 147:3

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

    Psalm 147:3

Healing of the heart is healing too.

  2. James 5:14–15

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

    James 5:14–15

James asks the church to gather and pray. We ask for healing together.

  3. Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

    Psalm 23:4

In the darkest valley, we are not alone.

  4. Matthew 11:28–30

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

    Matthew 11:28–30

Rest for the weary, from Jesus himself.

  5. 2 Corinthians 12:9

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.

    2 Corinthians 12:9

Paul begged God to take away a painful “thorn” (he doesn’t say what it was) and heard: my grace is enough. Both prayers are faithful.

  6. Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

    Romans 12:15

When a friend is ill, stay close in their sorrow.

  7. Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak.

    Isaiah 40:29

Strength for the weak is God’s specialty.

  8. Revelation 21:4

‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”

    Revelation 21:4

The final healing: no more death, crying or pain.

Pray with these verses

Lord, you heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds. Bring your healing to [name], in body and in heart. Give strength for today, and hold us close while we wait. Amen.

Questions people ask

Does God always heal when we pray?

The Bible shows God healing many people, and it also shows faithful people whose suffering was not taken away as they asked, like Paul’s unnamed “thorn” (2 Corinthians 12:7–9). We pray boldly for healing and trust God with the answer, and we use the gifts of medicine too.
