Bible verses about love

Love in the Bible starts with God’s love for us, then becomes a way to live.

The Bible says “God is love” (1 John 4:8) and “we love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Its most famous description is 1 Corinthians 13:4–7: “Love is patient, love is kind.” Jesus sums up the whole law in loving God and loving your neighbor (Mark 12:30–31).

The verses

  1. 1 Corinthians 13:4–7

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

    1 Corinthians 13:4–7

Often read at weddings, written to a church that was quarrelling. Love is something you do.

  2. John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

    John 3:16

The heart of the gospel in one sentence.

  3. 1 John 4:7–8

Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

    1 John 4:7–8

Love comes from God; whoever loves knows him.

  4. 1 John 4:19

We love because He first loved us.

    1 John 4:19

Our love is always a response.

  5. John 13:34–35

A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”

    John 13:34–35

Jesus’ new command, given the night before he died.

  6. Romans 12:9–10

Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another.

    Romans 12:9–10

Real love is sincere and puts others first.

  7. Colossians 3:14

And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.

    Colossians 3:14

Love holds every other virtue together.

  8. Mark 12:30–31

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

    Mark 12:30–31

The greatest commandments: love God with everything, and your neighbor as yourself.
