Bible verse
John 3:16: For God so loved the world
Perhaps the most famous sentence in the Bible: the good news in one verse.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
John 3:16 says that God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, Jesus, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. It comes in John’s account of Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus, a religious leader who came to him at night. It is often called “the gospel in a nutshell.”
What it means
- For God so loved the world. “So” means “in this way.” God’s love is shown in what he did. And it is for “the world”: everyone, not only the good or the religious.
- That He gave His one and only Son. Love that gives. Christians understand this as Jesus’ life, death on the cross and resurrection.
- That everyone who believes in Him. The invitation is to trust Jesus, open to anyone.
- Shall not perish but have eternal life. Not just life after death, but a new kind of life with God that starts now (John 17:3).
The conversation around it
Nicodemus came to Jesus at night with questions. Jesus told him he needed to be “born again” and pointed back to a story from Numbers 21: when the people were dying in the desert, Moses lifted up a bronze snake and whoever looked to it lived. “So the Son of Man must be lifted up” (John 3:14). The next verse matters too: God did not send his Son “to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him” (John 3:17).
Pray it
God, thank you for loving the world, and me in it, this much. Thank you for Jesus. I put my trust in him. Give me the life you promise, starting today. Amen.
Read alongside
Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

Questions people ask
Who said John 3:16?
Jesus, speaking to Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council (John 3:1–2). Some scholars think verses 16–21 are John’s own reflection on the conversation; either way, it is the heart of John’s gospel.
What does “eternal life” mean in John 3:16?
Life with God that never ends, and that begins now. Jesus defines it in John 17:3: knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom he sent.
