Bible verses about grief
Words for loss, for yourself or for someone you love who is grieving.

The Bible doesn’t rush grief. “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18), Jesus wept at his friend’s tomb (John 11:35), and God promises a day when “He will wipe away every tear” (Revelation 21:4). These verses give permission to mourn and a hope to hold.
The verses
Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
Psalm 34:18You don’t have to be strong for God to be near.
Matthew 5:4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Matthew 5:4Jesus calls mourners blessed: comfort is coming.
John 11:35
Jesus wept.
John 11:35The shortest verse in most Bibles. Jesus knew Lazarus would rise, and he still cried.
Romans 12:15
Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.
Romans 12:15When someone grieves, we don’t need answers; we need to weep with them.
Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4The valley is real. So is the Shepherd who walks it with us.
Revelation 21:4
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:4The Christian hope: death will not have the last word.
Lamentations 3:22–23
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!
Lamentations 3:22–23Written in the ruins of Jerusalem. Hope sometimes starts as one small sentence.
2 Corinthians 1:3–4
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
2 Corinthians 1:3–4God comforts us so that we can comfort others.
Sharing a verse with someone grieving
Less is more. A short message (“I’m thinking of you. ‘The LORD is near to the brokenhearted.’ I love you”) says enough. Offer to sit with them, bring a meal, or say their loved one’s name. Grief lasts longer than the funeral.
